Understanding Breast Lift Surgery Costs and Coverage
Choosing to have a breast lift (mastopexy) is often about restoring confidence and comfort. Over time, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, and natural ageing can cause the breasts to lose shape and firmness. Mastopexy is designed to elevate and reshape the breasts by removing excess skin and lifting the nipple into a more youthful position.
The financial side of surgery is an important part of the decision-making process. While some patients will need to cover the full cost themselves, others may qualify for partial rebates through Medicare and their private health fund if certain medical criteria are met.
When Rebates May Apply
In some cases, breast lift surgery may be eligible for a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item number. This generally applies when the degree of breast droop (ptosis) meets set clinical guidelines, for example, where the breast tissue rests significantly below the inframammary fold, causing physical symptoms or functional concerns.
Your consultation with Dr Duncan Taylor will include an assessment to determine whether you meet the eligibility requirements. If you do, Medicare will contribute to the surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees, and if you have appropriate private hospital cover, your health fund may also pay for the hospital costs.
Surgical Costs
From $9,000 – Surgeon’s Fee only
Other Costs to Factor In
Anaesthetist Fee – Approx. 30–40% of the total surgical fee (out-of-pocket).
Hospital Fee – A hospital quote will be provided.
If you are insured and eligible for an MBS item number, your health fund will usually cover this cost (you will only need to pay your excess).

Planning Your Surgery
Beyond the numbers, it’s worth considering the recovery process, garment requirements, and the fact that while a breast lift can restore shape, it does not alter breast volume unless combined with augmentation or reduction.
Dr Duncan Taylor will ensure you understand each stage, from the surgical plan to your expected recovery, and provide a personalised cost outline based on your goals and circumstances.
