What to expect and how eligibility may affect your total out-of-pocket costs

If you're considering brachioplasty (arm lift surgery), it's important to have a clear understanding of the associated costs and what may or may not be covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

This procedure is commonly sought by patients who have experienced significant weight loss, resulting in excess upper arm skin that can cause discomfort, hygiene issues, or impact quality of life. At Dr Duncan Taylor’s practice, we provide clear, personalised guidance throughout the process — starting with what to expect financially.

Medicare Rebate Eligibility for Arm Lift Surgery

Some patients may be eligible for a Medicare rebate if brachioplasty is performed for medical (not cosmetic) reasons. To qualify for a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item number, your condition must meet specific clinical criteria — typically related to excess skin following major weight loss that causes skin irritation, discomfort, or limits movement.

Eligibility is assessed during your consultation with Dr Taylor and may include supporting medical documentation. If approved, and if you hold private hospital insurance, your insurer may contribute to hospital-related costs depending on your level of cover.

Please note: If liposuction is included as part of the procedure, that component is considered cosmetic and is not eligible for Medicare or health fund rebates.

Bilateral Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) Costs

Surgeon’s Fee: From $9,000

+ Liposuction (if required): From $2,000

This includes surgical correction of excess skin on both arms. Liposuction may be recommended to improve contour, depending on your goals and anatomy.

Additional Costs to Consider

  • Anaesthetist Fee: Out-of-pocket costs will apply

  • Hospital Fee:

    • If your procedure is deemed medically necessary and you are insured, this may be partially or fully covered

    • If uninsured, hospital costs will apply

  • Liposuction Component: If required, this is considered cosmetic, and a hospital fee of $2,000–$3,000 will apply, depending on the selected facility

  • Post-Surgical Garment: Patients will need to purchase a compression vest with sleeves to the elbow to support healing

Individualised Quote and Surgical Planning

All costs listed here are indicative only. Every patient’s surgical plan is tailored to their individual needs, and a detailed quote will be provided following your initial consultation with Dr Taylor.

Our team will also guide you through the process of applying for any eligible Medicare and private health rebates.
