Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction involves making multiple small incisions, in which a cannula is passed through to remove excess fat with a suction device. This is often done on the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, buttocks, male breasts and under the chin. This surgery aims to improve body shape. Multiple surgeries may be required to gain the desired effect if a large volume of fat needs to be removed. This surgery is done under a general anaesthetic and is a day-case procedure in Perth.

What Can I Expect With Liposuction:

A Quick Overview

Surgery time: 1 hour.

Length of stay in hospital: Day case.

Recovery time: (The following are approximate times.)

Driving 24 hours,

Office work 2 - 3 days,

Strenuous work/exercise 3 - 4 weeks.

Garments: Compression garments for the body area being operated on, to be worn 24/7 for 4 - 6 weeks

Incision and scar: Multiple small, less than 1 cm incisions to the areas required.

Other Things to Consider

  • Liposuction will remove fat though the skin will remain. For younger patients with good skin elasticity, your skin may shrink down with the use of compression garments. For some patients, you may be left with sagging skin. If this happens, you may then choose to have this excess skin excised.

  • Although not very painful, liposuction causes significant bruising - this subsides after 3 - 4 weeks.
